We recently moved our news stand and gift shop to a larger retail shop space and have greatly expanded the number of gifts and sundries for your browsing pleasure. We’re really excited to see what you find fun, cool, quirky, and what you think are the absolute must-haves. When I started to put this blog post together, I intended on choosing my personal top 5 things… but I couldn’t stop at 5! So, here’s my top 10. When you’ve had a chance to stop by Detours, I’d love for you to share in the comments your personal favorites.
1. Federico Jewelry. He is one of our all time favorite jewelers.
Federico Jimenez was born in Oaxaca, Mexico in a Mixtep Indian Community. He and his wife fell in love with the Southwest in the early ’70’s. Although he now lives in California, he remains close to the culture of New Mexico, having served as a trustee of the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos.
2. Sweet Stuffed Animals. Whimsical and fun!
These animals by well-known Oaxacan fashion designer, Silvia Suarez are so sweet. They are 100% handmade and her design work employs more than 150 indigenous families in the creation of her signature textiles.
3. Darling Eye Masks. Everyone needs at least one!
For those who want to make a statement, even when they are sleeping, these eye masks are for you. My personal fave… wake me for champagne!
4. Local Los Poblanos Spa Products with locally grown lavender
No one should leave New Mexico without indulging in the lavender products from Los Poblanos. Grown organically in Albuquerque’s North Valley, Los Poblanos uses steam distillation to extract the lavender essential oil and ensure absolute purity. The spa products are then handmade in small batches right there on the farm.
5. High End Cotton Throws
These fab, washable throws in bold graphic patterns are perfect for travel or home. Take them with you on the plane, on a road trip or cuddle up with them on your own couch.
6. Locally-Made Bird Houses by Thomas Hogan
Are these New Mexico-made bird houses just the most darling things you’ve ever seen? Hogan has been making bird houses from reclaimed wood and other recycled items for the last ten years. They can be used outdoors to attract small birds like sparrows or finches, but many people buy them to use as unique decor inside their homes.
7. Vuarnet Sunglasses
One can never have too many pairs of sunglasses while visiting the Land of Enchantment. After all, we boast more than 300 days of sunshine per year. High-end, French sunglass designer Vuarnet keeps your eyes covered in style so you can enjoy the beautiful outdoors of New Mexico.
8. Felt La Fonda Travel Essentials
These cool felt totes and water bottle holders are a great souvenir from La Fonda. Colorful, practical and fun!
9. Made in USA Mimbres Designs
These dishes and trivets carry Mimbres designs based upon those used by Mary Jane Colter in the 1940’s on the Super Chief.
10. Kelly Jo Designs Tableware
You can’t help but notice the beautiful painted tiles in the guest room bathrooms here at La Fonda. Those painted tiles were done by Albuquerque artist Kelly Jo Kuchar. Kelly Jo’s ceramicware designs are inspired by New Mexico’s landscapes and cultures and widely treasured for their beauty and practicality. They are made with non-toxic materials and are dishwasher and microwave safe!
Ok. I can’t even choose 10! Here’s a bonus… lots of new local artists! We have Lisa Bemis watercolors, Oida Touchon oil paintings, Kathleen Brennan’s metal photographs and Stephen Kilbourn (large painting in center). This list is a small portion of what Detours has for you to discover. Happy shopping!
